Interview Tips

Surviving the interview

The next step in securing your dream job is attending an interview and having a strategy for success. Dress to impress as first impressions do count: you are presenting yourself as a potential ambassador for the company and so image is everything. It’s important to dress in a professional manner even if the work environment is fairly casual.

Both men and women need to be quite conservative: get rid of the chewing gum, cover up any tattoos, take out any brutal piercings and position yourself in the best possible light. If you have made an effort with your outfit, then, chances are, you will be judged to be someone who puts the same effort into every task they tackle.

Companies want to hire somebody who is competent, confident, successful and articulate. But interviews can be a nerve-wracking process. Remind yourself you have already passed the first hurdle, as you have made it to the shortlist. Relax and ensure your breathing is regulated and that you remain calm. It’s not the time to chug down a few double espressos. Australian Career Development Experts AC People says preparation is the key. In advising individuals on how to march into a job interview minus the jitters, AC People states:

  • Don’t be late
  • First impressions count. Avoid wearing loud colours, choose your best work outfit and turn off your mobile phone.
  • Be yourself. Be professional but don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through.
  • Listen carefully. There is nothing worse than to ask a question that the employer has already talked to you about.
  • Address the job criteria. Nervous energy is good but not if you come to the job interview unprepared. It’s to your advantage to carefully research the job and the company.
  • Be positive. If you are asked why your grades are low, then don’t give excuses, instead, focus on stating the positive facts and what you have learnt from your experiences.
  • Be poised. Pay attention to non-verbal behaviour. Look the interviewer in the eye; sit up straight with both feet on the floor. You should also control nervous habits such as fingernail biting, coughing, jiggling or giggling.
  • Practice makes perfect. Make sure your answers are clear and concise. You should practice answering with a friend or with your family members. When practicing, avoid terms such as “like” and “you know” and don’t sound too rehearsed, as if you are running for parliament.
