You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that the future of our fast-deteriorating global environment isn’t exactly rosy. In fact, according to the US-based Worldwatch Institute’s State of the World 2009 report the prognosis for the planet is positively grim.
And the good news? It’s never too late to take responsibility for your actions, embrace the ‘Think Global, Act Local’ campaign and help redress the predicted catastrophic consequences of climate change.
So, for those of you who want to take up the challenge of making 2009 greener and cleaner, let’s start with some simple tips on how to save water. They include:
1. Shower Power Try wetting yourself all over when you first turn the shower on, then turning it off while you soap yourself, before finally rinsing off the suds. You can also place a bucket under the shower, catch the water and recycle it in the garden.
2. Tap into change If you are washing dishes by hand, place a bucket in the sink and fill with water. Be sure to use an eco-friendly washing-up liquid and reuse the water used to wash the dishes in the garden. If you are waiting for the hot water to warm up, catch the running water, let it cool and then use it to wash your fruit and veggies.
3. Dirty laundry According to savewater.com.au about 20% of all water consumed in the home is used in the laundry. But did you know that if you wash with a full load on you will save about 10 litres of water with each wash? And before you buy a machine, look for those that have a four or more star energy rating.
